What is Curve (in editing)??

January 11th, 2011
I was browsing through the discussions and came across one about "favorite editing trick" and a lot of people mentioned "the curve". I was wondering what is this and what effect does it have on the photo? I use Lightroom for most of my editing and i noticed a graph type thing.. I'm not even sure if that's related. Thanks for your help!

so basically it's just a different way to edit the exposure etc?

Yup, that graph thing is what you edit to change curves. It basically changes the tones and contrasts. Try clicking on it, keeping your finger on the line and moving it, and look at how it affects your picture.

there are curves for many things in photos... the basic colour curve shows you how much black on the left and how much white on the right and where the middle ground lies in the middle... now the colours each have their own channel in many photos... so the bright red could be brighter than the blue... which give the photo a colour cast... the bigger the difference between the brightest and the darkest the more contrast... the 'curve' shows how the image moves from dark to light... smoothly, sharply, dull and flat...
