There is probably a very simple answer to this, but I don't use editing software enough to know. I have added text to a photo, but as the text is white it kind of blends into the light parts of the image. I don't want to change the text colour. How do I darken just a section of the photo without making it look obvious? I only have Picassa and GIMP. This is what I have done: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=185625461469842&set=a.185491704816551.42705.185480988150956
thanks in advance :)
doge/burn, or I'd suggest using a drop shadow on the font, maybe @asrai can tell you how to do it in gimp (been meaning to learn but too used to PS). A drop shadow can act as a darkening agent by adjusting how thick and blurry it is and where the "light" for the shadow is coming from.
You can add a drop shadow but not to the completed image, if you want to do that here is how
click on the text select and add your text in the usual way then in the layers window (if you dont have it on the screen it is ctrl+L) make sure the text layer is selected, then click on filters --->Light and Shadow -----> drop shadow then its just a question of playing around with the settings until you get the effect you are after :D
"Burning" works best for me; and "dodging" works to lighten an area. Old terms that stem from the days of developing film when you would expose just a portion of a negative to the the light source to darken a certain area of the print.
@neda@asrai@kellyhaysley@eringoodman Thank you for the advice! I remember doing the manual dodge/burning when I first learned dark room techniques, thanks for letting me know how to do it with software. I'll try a drop shadow I think, so thanks again :)
