some questions about my Nikon Coolpix L110

February 3rd, 2011
I am starting to think I have made a $200 mistake. What can I do to make my pictures better quailty? The only good pictures are taken with the flash and those are usually 1 in about 30 because I can never get the lighting right.

I had the same problem with my Casio Exilim. AFter a year, I finally figured out the different settings and I'm taking much better pictures now. Still not as awesome like everyone else here. It's a hit and miss, but now I'm getting used to the different features. Until I can afford a DSLR, I'll make the most of what I have. Hope your manual helps. :)

The thing about P&S's is that they dont have a big light sensor or a high iso ability like dslr's do, so when shooting for good quality you really need as much light as you can possibly get, thats why your only getting good shots when u use the flash. try shooting in manual mode to get all there setting to the best they can possibly be for the shot

@carrieoakey @stoksy Thank you both! looks like my next big buy may be a dslr. any suggestions on a decent priced one worth getting?

@bsingleton0010 hmm, how much are you willing to spend?
February 3rd, 2011
@stoksy around $500 maybe $600

@bsingleton0010 Looks like you might be able to get a canon eos 1000D off ebay for about $550, but then you need a lens to, which for the standard kit lens with image stabalization will be another $100 ( buy it now )

or cheaper if you bid against people for a second hand one

i dont think you'll get a cheaper new decent dslr for much less than that

@stoksy thanks

scratch that, go for a canon 500d instead, tiny bit more expensive, but quite a bit better

@stoksy thank you, I am brand new to all this.

Seriously, buy a Panasonic fz40 or fz100 if you're into a large zoom camera that's not quite DSLR level. I work at a camera store, and we can hardly keep up with the demand for these models!

I have a Nikon COOLPIX L20, and at first I felt the same way - like I'd never get a good picture with such a cheap camera. But it's really a matter of getting to know the different settings. I can't tell you how many great shots I've gotten with the Food setting! I also keep in mind what I can fix with post-processing. You don't even need a very expensive program to fix your photos. White balance is my best friend!

I've started using this camera and find if I increase the resolution to 5m 2592x1944, the pictures are cleaner. Today's photo was shot at that setting and the colors are pretty decent.

Are you shooting indoors? That will effect the lighting. Check the white balance setting. This may need to be set whenever you are indoors. I'm learning that one right now.

FWIW: I really like the 15x zoom, the choices for the resolution, white balance, the exposure compensation feature, and the best is the flash. When I turn it off, it stays off. The other smaller cameras would turn on the flash whenever I changed a setting. ACK!!! For me, that is often and it drives me crazy.

I want a dslr but know I will be doing more than turning it on and taking pictures. I am one to play with the settings quite often and a dslr will give that functionality plus the changeable lens. However, I hate carrying stuff. The cameras are bulkier and the extra parts need to be carried with the camera. I have not come on board to do that, yet. So, this is an inexpensive compromise at the moment. Even this is a change as I can't just put it in my pocket. So, if I can figure out how to carry this everyday, maybe a dslr is in my future. If not, then why invest in something I won't carry daily?

Anyway, check out my picture for today. How does it compare to what you are seeing?

@kaweeeeeee @proudrhrshipper @dmortega thank you all for your advice. I hope to save up enough to get a better camera but for now I guess I'll stick with my l110. I took a good picture today tell me what you all think once I get it uploaded.
