Nikon D90?

February 14th, 2011
I wouldnt consider myself a professional photographer but i hope to be headed in that direction. Im looking at getting the Nikon D90 and Im wondering what everyone thinks of it ?
maybe you can judge by some of my photos if it would be a good camera for me to move to next? i currently have a Canon PowerShot S5 IS (a high end P&S) and I feel like ive outgrown it and im ready to get into something with more options :)

It seems like you enjoy shooting a lot of portraits. I have a Nikon D80 that is the best portrait camera I've used in awhile.

I would look at either the D80 or D300. Both of these camera are top quality and have great sensors. You can get them used at good prices and then have enough money left over to buy some decent lenses.

The only reason I'd suggest buying the D90 is if you enjoy shooting HD video a lot. Which is really kind of stupid with a still camera, but it is a feature of the camera.

@jasonbarnette i should mention i would be using whatever i buy for video aswell, we have 3 kids and no video camera so something that does decent video is a must
thanks so much for all of the advice i will look into both of those as well!

@jasonbarnette
the D80 isn't made anymore, so you would have to buy it used.

I have a D90 and I love it! But I am looking at a D7000 now. It looks like an outstanding camera with not that much price difference.

Presently shoot with the D80 and I'm looking at the D7000. Heard it's replacing the D90 so would like the latest technology.

@brandywalker365 In that case, I'd go with the D300s. The sensor is the same size as the one used in the D7000 and are both CMOS sensors. The D7000 shoots at a slightly higher resolution compared to the D300s, but otherwise they are the same camera.

Since the D7000 just came out you probably won't be able to find one used anywhere. They go for about $1200. You can get a good, used D300s for about $800.

Keep this in mind about Nikon camera bodies: the models in the tens (40, 60, 80, 90) are meant for pure amateurs, the models in the hundreds (100, 200, 300, 700) are meant for semi-professionals, the models in the thousands (5000, 7000) are meant for serious amateurs, and the models in the ones (2, 3, 3x) are meant for serious professionals. Pick the model that best fits your needs, thinking down the road as well.

The d90 is labelled as a start off professional camera. My friend said, every professional has a d90 on their back. I have one, and i believe that it is an excellent camera. Something like the d300s is more pricey, but obviously has some higher standards. My friend bought his for around 1000-2000 dollars with 2 lenses.

I previously had an Olympus E520, for Christmas i was given a D90 - it has really taken me to that next step in photography! I still have so much to learn, but now i am only limited by my knowledge and my imagination. I LOVE this camera!

I have a D90, and I love it. I'm by no means professional, but its great for everything I do with it.

I went from a Powershot to the D90 and I think it was the perfect step up for me. It's a terrific camera, and it's not too difficult to learn. It's reasonably priced so you can invest in some good lenses as you learn. I don't see it as a camera you buy if you want HD video at all. In fact I hardly ever do video with it (though that's an option). Rather, I bought it because it has a huge sensor and it takes amazing pics (well, if the photographer doesn't screw them up). I absolutely love my D90.

I LOVE my D90; however, if I were shopping now (which I'm not), I might be looking at the D7000 as well.

I have a D90 and love it! It is a great camera that will do just about anything you want it to. It has helped me become a better amateur photographer, but I'm ready to upgrade. I would suggest you take @jasonbarnette's advice and consider the D300. Let us know what you go with!
