Seeing as I just recently got my camera I still don't know what over half the stuff on it and the stuff that came with it does (working on it though) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the point of the "cover" for the lens is?
I'm talking about the black plastic thing that can be attached to the end of the lens.
As far as my brain could figure out, it keeps away the light or focuses it differently in some way?
I know it must seem like a silly question but I really have no clue :P
Yes, it was the lens hood :) And I did read the manual but the thing is, the manual only covers the camera and the I got the lens as an extra in a deal so no manual for that one :P
@deanshotgun Just had a quick look at my manuel to make sure i'm telling you correctly coz i'm still learning what my camera does too. It will minimise lens flare and cuts excess lighting to improve picture quality!
Good luck!
Amy, a lens hood is useful if you're shooting diagonally into the light where bright light from 'the side' can get into the lens causing flare. The hood limits/prevents this. Shooting with the sun behind you removes the risk of direct flare and a hood is less beneficial.
They're supplied for a reason and should be used when appropriate. :)
@nodecaff Thank you for the explanation :) I really couldn't figure out what it was supposed to do. Now I can actually put it to use instead of having it keep the camera bag "warm".

The plastic 'thingy' clips onto the end of the lens to keep that expensive bit of kit from damage, best remove it to take a photo though ;-)
