Party Pictures - Kids Birthday or Any Other

April 17th, 2011
I was at a 6 year olds birthday party today and tried to take a some pictures. They turned out terrible! I would post one or two, but I am really too embarrassed. Now the party was forced indoors due to rain and there was an inflatable jumphouse taking up the entire family room (you can see my picture from today if you are interested in what that looks like), all of which made it even more difficult to take good photos. But I never take good party pictures unless it is a close-up or of a group. Any suggestions or tips that you know of for good party pictures - kids parties or any party really?

I had my nieces 4th birthday party yesterday and was taking the photos. It was indoors too because of rain but I just clicked away the whole day hoping for some good ones. The ages ranged from 2 months to 4 years, so I know how hard it can be to get good photos of kids lol.
I know that's not really helpful but I don't really have any 'real' tips. Just click and try your best. I'm sure they'll still be a good memory for everyone :-)

hey jen, i've had miserable luck with party pictures as well. for me, it just seems like too many elements i can't control. a little too chaotic. i usually just give up after a little while.

I don't really have the best of luck at kid parties.

I always shoot on the kids level. So I don't just shoot the top of the pretty little heads. I also will shoot in burst mode because you never know what you might miss with those quick little suckers.

Sorry I have a heap of party photos as I have four kids and we seem to always be at someone's party!! Not sure what you are after and your photo is not that bad, amazing that they put the castle into the house!! You may need to lighten it a bit in editing but I think I understand what you are after as I have a lot of difficulty taking good photos indoors. One think that has really helped me is finding the white balance adjustment on my camera - this has made a huge difference, especially since so many places have fluorescent lighting. When I get to an indoor party I tend to take a few different pictures on different white balance settings to see which one comes out better. Hope this is of some help. Here are a few of our party shots

indoor kids parties are really tough because it's often dark, and kids don't stay still =P my best advice is to use the fastest lens you have and/or use a flash. for kids in action, shoot in time priority (i usually start at 1000, but that varies depending on the activity). it gets easier! good luck =)

I read a tip on an earlier discussion on theis topic and teh writer suggested taping a piece of tissue paper over the flash to reduce the glare and teh dead tones. Do'nt know if that helps you.

@jo365 Amazing photos. So you really concentrate on one child at a time. That would be a great start!
