I thought i'd share with you, a technique I have learned to make dull grey clouds look moody and interesting.
I got a few comments on this photo about the clouds...
I use photoshop, so here is what I do...
1. I added a high contrast black and white layer, then masked off the tree's and road so only the sky was black and white. Then reduce the opacity to around 30%...you can have the opacity as low or high as you want.
You dont need to do HDR to get really good looking clouds :)
Alternatively, the masking work with two different sets of curves or channel mixing will work really well, for clear cut subjects that need separation using two different editing techniques often works out well...
One of my favourites is with images that fall away to too dark from flash exposure is to apply a gradient to the adjustment layer, evening it out - any adjustment layers on top will modify the new image rather than the original...
@killerjackalope Yep I use the gradient tool as an alternative to a grad nd filter sometimes, or what half of a subjects face is too dark, I find sampling the colour of the light side of the face works well too
Works a treat because it's so instantly changeable... I prefer shooting to edit, partly down to equipment and partly because unless I start bringing a sword to work I'll not get a decent shot otherwise...
wonderful tutorial...
