3-dimensional view

In order to get more of a 3-dimensional image, the technique I have tried on a few photos is to take 2 pictures of the same subject, having one of them slightly out-of-focus and then layering the in-focus one on top and playing with the opacity - an example is below. Are there ways this can be improved upon or any other methods to get a more non-flat appearance.

Wow! You did an amazing job! It does look very dimensional! Very cool!

You could fade the background a bit, not just blur it. I tried that with my most recent photo. I faded the background tulips but kepts one of them bright and in focus. If you look at the larger view, it almost looks like it's popping out of the page. Your photo looks great thought. The woman almost looks fake too....very cool.

Here's my photo:

you can achieve the same effect without taking two photos. you can just duplicate the layer then blur it to use as your "out of focus" layer. if you mask out the subject and keep that "in focus" you can fake a shallow depth of field.

@interludephotos It certainly does pop out at you, thank you for the reply.

@christiq Even using a tripod, I have to be careful on the lining up of the photos; your method makes it easier. Thank you for the suggestion.
