Which lens to buy?

May 16th, 2011
I'm looking for an affordable fast lens to give me some flexibility for portraits and weddings...since I have budget for this item I'm definitely limited. I had ordered a 50mm Nikon 1.4, but it's been on back order for a while and I'm a bit impatient. My two choices now are...

Sigma 50mm 1.4 (which crazy enough costs more than the Nikon) or Nikon 85mm 1.8.

Any thoughts? I have a 70-200 2.8 Nikon on my wish list and I'm saving for that one...but I need a fast lens to help me out in the meantime.

Thanks!
Robin

I'm no expert, but the Nikon 50mm 1.8 is the best $150ish I've spent on camera equipment, ever.

Nod
50mm is certainly more flexible, and if your camera is not full frame then 85 will be 100mm+ equivalent...

I agree with Nod, 85 mm will not be very handy if you don't have a full frame camera.

Speaking from a Canon point of view (but these lenses are very similar in build and photo quality)- I have the 50mm f/1.4 and I LOVE it! Ultimately, it is just a better build quality and faster focusing than the f/1.8, BUT, the f/1.8 will still take great photos. I also suggest going to amazon.com and looking at the photos submitted by the customers and their reviews.

Personally, I have stayed away from Sigma due to their quality control. Most reviews I have read will complain about this.

I agree with the others in not worrying about the 85mm unless you have a full-frame camera.

@bobg @eddyj @viranod @scatcat @onarom Thanks to everyone for the tips! I just received a notice last night that my 50mm 1.4 did ship so I didn't have to cancel the order. I should have it today!!!
