thinking about new camera? or just technique (action)

sorry if this has been done to death or in the wrong forum.

At the moment I'm using a Nokia Coolpix p&s. It's good because I can shove it in my rucksack and it's there- I have 4 kids and end up carrying their stuff too. It has a great zoom but I'm getting very frustrated with the delay between press and capture.

This is not apparent on any of my work on here yet but that's because I'm doing the sp challenge and I can make myself stay still. Later on in the year I'm going to be stood at swimming meets again trying to capture the kids swimming. The pools are 50 m and I'm often on the side..can't always get to the end of the lane which would be the best place.

My nikon's great for getting zoomed onto the kids on the block, if I part depress and time it right I can get great dive shots........but in the water? Ugh. I don't know if it's me, the angle I end up on poolside or the camera but unless it's breaststroke I get many, many Bad shots. (Arms in the wrong place, usually under water, head submerged- missed the breath- or just splash.)

I did get one of my daughter on here

but this was at warm up speed....and I was stood on the dive block - something I won't be allowed to do at competitive meets.

opinions and thoughts please- camera needs changing- I need changing lol.

hoping that'll take you to the right place, prob need to cut and paste though, sorry.

thanks for your help in advance

My point and shoot i rarely use i am so addicted to my digital slr. You will never get rid of the lag time with the point and shoots. Its just the way they are made. Get a slr camera and you will never regret it. The canon rebel tti is a good one and fairly nice price budget wise. But if you want a good site to look at reviews i love dpreview.com. Very detailed reviews. P.S. Correction- I never use my point and shoot anymore. =P Some good sites to buy from bhphotoandvideo.com and adorama.com

oh and forgot to say I'm in Australia and I think there're warranty issues if I buy outside of the country......found this the hard way when one of my horrors DS needed repairing- it was confiscated as black market and probably destroyed- simply because I bought it in the UK.

:/

I like canons, their consumer SLRs are usually touted as the easiest to use as well...

In the meantime use the marker rails (I forget what you call them the lane dividers mayber?) as focus points... Focus a few metres ahead of the person and you'll have more freedom timing it as they come through the shot...

In general moving water is a jerk to focus on...

do you have some sort of multi-shot function on your camera? i have the ability to hold down my shutter button and the camera will keep snapping away until i let go of it. that might help.

i think in general its hard to get a good action shot of sports. theres always so much going on and the chances for the perfect set up are grossly outnumbered by the chances for crap shots. my best advice is to just shoot as much as you can and sort out the good from the bad when you get home.

I have used this website a couple of times now. They are based in Australia and have an Australian phone number you can talk to them on. the goods are shipped out of Hong Kong in a super fast time. Pretty sure the warranty is not an issue as it is an Australian based site. And better still the prices are fantastic

@killerjackalope lane ropes :)
been trying that but it's not just the focus with the water it's watching the swimmers rhythm too- when I just focus on one spot ahead of the swimmer- you can almost guarantee that's the spot they'll have their head under or their arms at an odd angle so you kind of have to pan the swimmer and get ahead because of the delay...

does any of this make any sense? --- I think I'm seeing that it's not totally my skills that are naff through typing this lol- I know what I need to do- just need quicker reaction.... correct?

@genesislomax not that I've discovered. Stupid thing freezes too after x number of shots- seems to be variable.

I'd guessed that - take huge numbers, maybe get 2 lol, just trying to improve my odds lol.

@eddyj hi Eddy, I think I'm prob the direct opposite regarding style. Looked at nikons- looked at bank balance- looked at something else lol. They look to be great cameras- can't justify the price for a hobby though....not ATM. Thanks for your thoughts.:)
