What Brand of Filters

June 3rd, 2011
Morning Guys and Gals.

Just of out for the day but have spent ages looking for filters online.

I am fairy new to 365 and photography but I would like your opinion on the best brand of filters to go for. I have heard Hoya and Kenko are good (but I am on a budget).

Your input would be greatly appreciated. xxx

I've absolutely forgotten what mine are but I will check later and get back to you - they were $20 or something and have served me well, considering.

I like the cokin system. They're square and fit into a plastic holder so they can be used on multiple lenses.

I usually go with Hoya filters, they may not be the cheapest but they have not let me down yet

Most filter makers have different grades. I would choose them based on the lenses. Put simply, less expensive lenses go with budget filters, more expensive ones get high quality ones.

I think it depends on what filters you are using. If it's a UV or ND filter go with Hoya or (I use Rocketfish) they are stronger and made with better glass, but for color or effects... I think the cheap ones are just as good. I've paid less than $1 each for colored filters

Ok there are filter and there are filter Yvette, UV for cutting down sunlight rays (brightness) Polarisers for glare, then you have the ND2,4,8,I use either 2 or 4 the numbers mean thats 2 f-stops are needed or 4 f-stops are needed usually these filter are for water falls to slow down the water the polarisers are good for beaches and heavy sunlight , The other thing is if you use CS5 you can use the filter in them plus download some others, But dont count on it to get the perfect pic.. trial and error much luv :)
there are B+W and Singh Ray very expensive, Hoya digital pro around the 60-80 $$ mark or cheaper

my theory is why spend good dollars for a lens only to cover it with cheap plastic? i say spend the dollars on the good glass filters like marumi. unless you have a relatively inexpensive lens then a hoya or equivalent is fine.

I stick to Hoya

Hoya and Tiffen used here. I took shots outside (flowers etc.) with my $30 (US) Hoya UV on my lens. I took the filter off and took more shots. I can't tell a difference in the shots, so that's good I guess. However, beware of eBay as most of the filters on there are counterfeit.
