Bird Photography

June 21st, 2011
Hey everyone! So there's a bird nesting in a hanging basket by my house. I tried to get a shot of it today, but this is all I got:

Does anyone have any tips that could help me get a better shot? I'm afraid to get too close to it, I don't want to scare it away. Soon there will be baby birds though, and I'd love to see them!
Any tips are much appreciated, thank you!

You just need a longer lens. Do you know anyone that you can borrow one from, or perhaps hire one for a day? Cute photo that you've got tho, neat nesting place!

Looks like a dove- they sit very still for photos. Babies too. I think I would wait till she leaves- cut the one stem that is angled under her head and just watch. You should see the babies well from where you shot this.

Zoom lens for sure! I got this with my 55-250mm:

And try to catch them when the background is unobtrusive - flying or sitting on a fence with a distant background.

I want a bigger zoom lens. These are a couple that I took yesterday with my Canon EOS Rebel T1I and my 55-250 zoom lens. We were fortunate that we were able to get pretty close to them.

In addition to using a bigger lens, you could try cropping the image. You've got a decent camera, so the photo should still be good at a large size if you do that.

I forgot to mention that I did crop my photos to show more detail on the birds and less of the tree. I got as good a focus as I could with my lens, then cropped the pics on Picnik.

Yeah I did crop it some... maybe I could do it a little more. I'm going to try and get another shot now!
