Bag of Tricks (fire)

December 13th, 2011
I have been asked how I get some of my shots. Since I don't use photoshop often I have some small but effective tricks.
In this discussion I will tell how I got these shots.

It is very easy. All you need is a piece of glass, the thicker the better. I have a 1/4 in. thick piece. A bottle of lighter fluid. The lighter fluid burns fast so the temperature is not that hot. Make sure your glass is away from anything flammable (backdrops, curtains, ect.) Set your non flammable object in the middle add a little bit of fluid, ignite, and click.
Be careful and have fun. Feel free to post your attempts here.

These are amazing... I'd love to try this, but I think I may wait untilthe weather is better and I can do it outside! :)

Great stuff, thanks for sharing :)

I was thinking hand sanitizer because of the alcohol content....lighter fluid is probably easier!

@shadesofgrey I tried rubbing alcohol but it never really catches fire enough to make flames at least not in small amounts.

oooh, I can already smell the burning eyebrows ... thanks for the inspiration, must try this :)

@shuterfly This one by @shortperson2002 is what made me think of that for your shots

Thank you for explaining. How do you get the black background?
December 13th, 2011
@herussell a black sheet hung on the wall and draped over table. just keep your glass away from the part hanging from the wall. Start with small amounts of fluid in a "test burn" to see what the right amount of flame you want is without burning anything else.

Thank you! That makes sense. I'll try that when I can get the materials.

Be careful! Sometimes glass kind of explodes under intense heat...like those slides in chemistry glass! Just saying....:-)

@5unflow3r That's why I advised thicker glass. Like I said the two pieces I have are 1/4 inch thick. The fluid burns very quick, so the flames don't cause much heat. I was able to pick my bottle up after 5 different burns in a row. It was warm but by no means near hot enough to explode.

I just use ordinary wood... ;)

Or marshmallows!

@shuterfly That's just the mom in me talking...carry on. :-)
December 14th, 2011
@5unflow3r I do want people to be careful with this. It's relatively safe if you treat it with caution. Because no matter how warm or hot the flame, fire is fire and I would hate to see anything bad happen from someone trying this. You are correct about the thinner glass it can and will crack or shatter if it gets too hot. So one last time I can't stress enough please use thicker glass to try this :)

Some more inspiration to someone I hope.
