Hair ice by djepie

Hair ice

First of all, merry Chrismas to all of you! In the Netherlands it's a bright, sunny, freezing day. We went with our daughters to national park Hoge Veluwe and found hair ice / hoarfrost / frost beard. A rather unique phenominon, mostly seen between 45 en 55 degrees North. For me it's the first time I saw this delicate frost object, created by moisture from fungi in dead wood. It's being pressed out of the wood and when there is a high humidity it doesn't evaporate, but freezes. When you touch it, it melts immediately, as it does when lit by the sun (like on this photo).
Bizzarre!!! Lovely capture
