These are screw spikes. They're about 6" (15cm) long and 1" (2.54cm) in diameter. They're used for fixing railway rails to the sleepers.
Lester and I went to a '40s day at Quainton steam railway today. It wasn't spectacular but it was an enjoyable way of getting out for a few hours.
Instead of candid shots of 1940s re-enactors, I came back with this pile of rusty, old screws. I liked the colours, textures and all the different lines.
Lester says it's a bloke thing. I must be turning into a bloke. :-)

Love the detail and sharpness of the shot. My husband thinks it is a brilliant shot. He is one of those blokes of a certain age who loves anything to do with railways.
