This is a stretch of the Grand Union Canal at Marsworth. According to my resident canal expert (Lester) , the breaks were probably caused by a narrowboat navigating the waterway; there's a discernible line of finer shards of ice which suggests the path of a boat. Good luck to them in this cold because you have to stand outside to steer but at least nbs are toasty-warm inside.
