I've fallen in love with the brass candlesticks all over again! Also, it's our 21st wedding anniversary, and brass is the modern "traditional" gift item - so it's a good day for this picture.
The one in the front is about 200 years old and belonged to a Voortrekker (Pioneer) family who were part of one of the big 1840's movement of settlers up north - and then returned some years later to the family farm in the Fraserburg district, having decided that the land north of the Vaal River would never be home. This group were called the "Terrug Trekkers" (Returning Pioneers). My parents bought it on a farm sale from one of the descendants.
The other candlestick came from Wilkie's (my late Godfather) home. He was a serious collector of Cape Antiques, but I know nothing about it's history.
