Hope by elza

Hope

I couldn't but put this shot up for New Year's eve. This was my sixth picture of a sunny day and a walk along the water front at Sliema. Crowds enjoying a coffee, sunbathing, sailing...
We have hundreds of workers just like this one who managed a perilous journey across countries and the Mediterranean sea, (some do not; yesterday an empty wooden boat used to transport migrants was found standed in a Gozo cave) in the hope of a better life and find themselves working in harsh conditions for pittance. But they keep hoping; no vacation leave, no sick leave, no union, no-work-no-pay.
I look at this picture with sadness and some shame as these are workers who are exploited by fellow countrymen and a government who lets it happen and with no vision for improvment.
Yet I wanted to convey also hope as the man has his back to [yesterday's] darkness while looking out into the light and working his way towards a better future.
The light and dark convey exactly what you wanted to. Fav

An amazing image - and such a potent way to illustrate your thoughts.

Great capture. So sad that people come looking for a better life and are exploited.

Great photo and accompanying narrative. Favourite.

I like the way you used the photo to express the idea of turning from darkness to a hope for a lighter future. Rob Z @robz beat me to the use of the word 'potent'.
