When I was in Rome as the Gulf War broke out, I remember listening to the Pope speak in St Peter's Square in his short traditional weekly address from the window. His words became a poster around the city in moments: "la guerra è un'avventura senza ritorno." War is an adventure without return. Utterly painful watching the news.
