6th April 2014

I found this spider in our garage today… it's a 'False Widow' spider. There has been a lot in the press recently about these as some types can be venomous although not dangerous, apparently they can sting like a wasp.

I did some research and found that actually this is a False Widow spider better known as the 'Rabbit Hutch' spider - latin name Steatoda bipunctata! This sort does not bite and is quite common and native to the UK. Although it does look a lot more intimidating that our usual orb spiders I decided to leave her where she is as she will be doing a good job keeping the flies down in the summer.
Eek, take it away!

The sight of that spider, false or not, might keep me out of the garage!

I have to admit she is beautiful even though I'm not fond of spiders. Beautiful sharp focus and nice bokeh in your capture, Emma. BTW, I just posted something to you this morning, finally!

@catwoman2 @tristansmum I don't mind spiders but I was getting a bit freaked out when she was blown up to 100% on screen! I'm excited about the post… will be watching out each day although things seem to take about a week to get here. Sending you an email with some Isabelle and Maddy mouse photos!

Thank you - BTW, I've just signed a petition that my Mum sent via FaceBook regarding repairs to the Penzance to Newlyn walkway, I can't believe a petition is required to fight for repairs! http://www.change.org/petitions/cornwall-council-save-newlyn-green-penzance-promenade?fb_action_ids=10202462577259520&fb_action_types=change-org%3Arecruit&fb_ref=__EYpHWAAJMx
