12th July 2015

After the stresses of yesterdays journey we are finally in Portugal and it is hot! The thermometer is hitting the scale at 37 degrees and there is not a single 'photographers cloud' to be seen.

We are here courtesy of Avis as I won their 'Best Road' photo competition a few months ago. We are driving a Mercedes E300 Bluetech Hybrid (apparently!) and it is about twice the size of the sort of hire car we normally drive abroad. It goes like a dream but I am worried the entire time as it is so big and other drivers on the road have a habit of cutting corners on the very bendy roads and I am determined not to crash the car.

We are walking into the nearby town of Peso de Regua to avoid parking! This is the view from the bridge of our hotel which overlooks the river Douro. We are in the wine growing district so I hope to support the tourism industry by drinking a lot of it (when I'm not on driving duties obviously).
Gorgeous view, Emma. Drinking a certain amount of the local product might help you not to worry so much about crashing the Mercedes ... :)
