23rd May 2017

Our last day in New York as we head back home on our flight later in the day at 9.15pm from JFK. We have bravely decided to travel on the subway as the roads are always so jammed and Colin has worked out that despite us checking out Fulton Road yesterday, we can actually get all the way to Howard’s Beach for the shuttle train to the terminal.

It was actually quite a walk of three blocks but we thought it would be achievable and there is a lift which is a big advantage. Despite meaning to take it gently (check out our final steps of our trip) we ended up walking all the way to the Hudson and then a stroll through Riverside Park southwards until we were adjacent to Central Park and then back up via Manhattan Avenue past Morningside Park. It was here that we saw yet more of the wrought iron fire escapes that are all around the city and I thought it was fitting it should be the last shot of New York.

We lunched in Sylvia’s Soul Food restaurant back in Harlem and this last time Colin got fist-bumped TWICE but still no photographic evidence! The food was great, we were given complimentary warm fresh baked corn bread and followed it up with Sylvia’s fried chicken, mashed potato and Collard greens.

We then said goodbye to our apartment and headed - with cases - to 125th Street, not our usual stop but the one we checked out this morning. Unfortunately it was at this stage that two of the wheels on my case failed and I literally had to drag 20+ kilos for near to a mile. The wheels got so hot and my arms were really hurting and I was wondering if I’d manage it but my usual sheer bl***y mindedness got me and the cases to the metro stop.

15,714 steps today.

Total step count for our entire trip is a staggering 182,662 - WOW!
Nice. Too bad they don't put gargoyles above windows anymore.

@lionroar I think I spotted a few where we were staying in Harlem on the Brownstone houses. We loved your city but after a few days in Washington, a week in NY mostly walking, we were pretty tired by the time we went home!
