How nice to be wearing dry clothes! One of the good things about our apartment is the laundry downstairs - free to use and I found some washing powder under the sink so all our sodden clothes were quickly washed and dried.
Guess what? It rained again today! Apparently this area has needed the rain for a long time. It was sunny all last week. Sunshine is forecast for next week. Tropical downpours and electrical storms are forecast all of this week. Don't believe the blue skies of the brochures.
Despite the deep gullies down the edge of the roads in Port Douglas and the metal roofs, it seems that although being a tropical area with rain forest, the town is not geared up for this type of rain as the post office had flooded and remained closed all day (no stamps for my postcards).
We spent a leisurely day around Port Douglas avoiding the showers. We found a mango tree heavy with ripe fruit and underneath doves and my favourite roseate lorikeets were feasting on the fruit which is today's colourful photo. Later in the day we decided to see if we could find the fruit bay colony often mentioned that live in the town. We took careful instruction on their location and I 'Googled' as well. We set off well before sunset when they are supposed to fly on masse to their feeding places deep in the mangrove swamps. Despite checking and rechecking our route we found the supposed location but absolutely no sign of the bats. A local man told us that they had all left a couple of years ago and he was very glad as they made a lot of mess and noise. Oh dear. I did spot a couple of new birds for my count though which was good and on the way home we bought some delicious massive prawns for dinner along with rocket and aioli - Mmmm!
