15th May 2018

We woke to sunshine today although it was difficult to actually see with our little window which faces onto a tiny inner courtyard. We are leaving Segovia today and heading onto the little town of Lerma less than thirty minutes south of Burgos.

We breakfasted at our usual (well for the last two days anyway) spot off the Plaza Major and then returned to brave getting the car out of the garage. In the event it was not nearly as bad as getting it in! Initially we drove to the ‘Casa de la Mint’ - the Segovia mint which also happens to house an interpretation centre for the Aqueduct. It was literally 5 minutes out of town and really was impressive. Unlike the disappointing centre in Potes about the Picos, this centre looked brand new (although opened in 2012) and was presented jointly in Spanish and English and answered all the questions we had about how the aqueduct was built. It just seems such a shame that very few people are aware that this place exists.

We then set the SatNav to Lerma and set off, under two hours away through changing landscape which moved from rock to chalk to fertile soil.

Lerma is a tiny town and most definitely Spanish. Our new ‘home’ for the next two nights anyway is a Posada connected to a Michelin recommended restaurant which we managed to enjoy a tapas lunch at and then an evening meal. On street parking not a problem directly outside of our accommodation. My rough ‘Spanglish’ came into play as it turns out that the owners do not speak much English, or rather the same amount that I speak of Spanish!

Our room overlooks the plains of Spain and with the wind whistling, we can watch the swifts screaming outside the window. Lerma is a lovely town of sandstone buildings and an impressive parador with many turrets! There is also a posada dog - not sure of his name but he is very cute!
