Another early start and after driving around we did not see very much until our journey back for breakfast... this Bull Elk (his female was in the background) was grazing close to the road.
As we slowed he turned to look right at us and I'll admit we speeded up again! This was a true 'grab shot' out of the window across Colin who was driving at the time so not perfectly sharp. We have since learnt exactly how dangerous these magnificent stags can be, as a large number of visitors' cars have been attacked by them, hyped up with testosterone in the rutting season.
(NB - Finally got an excellent view of a Grizzly bear 3-4 years old walking alongside the road amongst the trees, I was driving and camera was in the back of the car... no photo... never mind, it was a brilliant sight!!)
@tristansmum Luckily they shed them after the autumn rut. In the town of Jackson there are four massive arches - one on each corner of the town square made out of piles of shed elk antlers - amazing. @maggiemae It is a bit disconcerting having to carry bear bells and deliberately make a noise so we don't surprise any 'nature'... this elk makes a bugling noise when rutting, it is really funny as it isn't at all strong like our red deer noise but a kind of high warble... not at all becoming for such a magnificent beast!!
Wow what a handsome beast!! I hadn't realised how danderous they were!! Lucky you to have seen this stag plus a Grizzly bear!! I went to the Canadian Rockies a few years ago and all we saw was a chipmunk!!
