Bombardes are hand made, and most often taylor made. The reed of the instrument is still made with a true reed, not with plastic. The sound produced by a bombarde depends on the degree of humidity of the reed. Therefore, between performances, the reed is preserved in a small pocket box, and before playing the instrument, the musician has to tune the humidity of the reed by dipping it into his mouth.
