Built in 1909 and closed in 1961 because a larger lock was necessary, the Plaquemine lock linked Bayou Plaquemine and the Mississippi River. It's now a state park and national historic site.
@olivetreeann Thanks for your comments. I edited my description a little. As ships got larger, the old lock became obsolete. The Army Corps of Engineers wanted to destroy it but were convinced by local citizens to let it remain. The saddest story I heard was of a little boy drowning in the bayou just beyond the lock--you know how boys are drawn to water....
Thanks for answering the question! Oh, that is so sad about the boy- but yes. Sadly we knew of a boy who drowned when my sons were younger. He'd swum out to a floating dock on a lake and got stuck underneath it. No one noticed he was missing until it was too late. Tragic!
Shots like these often work well in mono especially as the sky has got a lot of nice detail in it and it can be made to look quite moody. Great shot as it is and nicely sharp throughout.
