Slave cabin, St. Joseph Plantation, Vacherie, Louisiana
Thanks for your comments and favs on my two previous shots of the slave quarters. This is the last photo--of the ones at this plantation anyway. Many of the beautiful old Southern houses no longer have slave cabins, for various reasons. In recent years, however, people have come to see the importance of preserving history, no matter how ugly. These were moved closer to the big house so tourists can see them.
Years ago I visited an antebellum house in Natchez, Mississippi where the tour guide referred to slaves as "servants." So when I trained as a docent at Magnolia Mound Plantation in Baton Rouge, I was relieved to learn that their policy as an accredited museum was to present history as accurately as possible, including the realities of slavery. One of the books on our reading list was 12 Years a Slave. I plan to see the movie this week.
I do believe being honest about our history is imperative to keep us from making those same mistakes again. I am saddened to see so much of history being watered down, ignored or reworked to be, let's say more "user friendly". This is a great shot- I really like the composition, and the texture of all that wood and paint. Great shot!
