I wish I could help but I have taken no end of terrible soccer pictures. Usually someone runs right in front of my subject just at the last minute.... The action in this shot is great though. I think you are well on your way.
:D Great action shot of my favorite sport! My only suggestions is fast shutter speed but you look like you have that down! When I was shooting other teams at my tournament in March, I liked watching the goalkeepers dive and attempting to get a few continuous shots of it :) A tripod might be preferable for something like that though depending on what you want to do with the end results.
Also this reminds me of my premiere league when I was in 8th grade/high school. My team was red and white (Lafreniere) and our rival was the same green color (Carrollton). Carrollton and another league merged with Lafreniere though after I started college.
The best shots that I got during my soccer mom days were from mid-field or by the goal/18 yard line. A lot of DSLR's have a sports mode or rapid shutter mode. That may also work well when there are a lot of players around the ball or everyone is in the goal area and shots are being fired quickly off rebounds. I was shooting 35mm in those days- boy would I have loved a digital then!! This is a pretty good shot for someone who's not used to the game! I'm sure you'll get the hang of it the more games you see.
