Located in Port Allen, the city named for his family, the 1962 statue of Henry Watkins Allen is causing a Confederate-statue controversy with a different twist. Is it a symbol of racism or a piece of art? Or both?
The work of sculptor Angela Gregory, it has a different feeling to it, showing a man thoughtful in his defeat. Gregory was a respected Louisiana sculptor. Allen was a slavehoilder, a Confederate soldier and Confederate governor of Louisiana. A group wants it removed from the park across from the courthouse. A nearby museum wants it moved there to be displayed with information on its history and context. The city voted to keep it where it is.
That's very interesting. The people have spoken, now will others be willing to let them have their opinion or will they trash the statue anyway because the people of this town didn't agree with them. Since most of these protests are really generated from a Marxist perspective, I'd advise the town to put it in the museum so that it doesn't get destroyed by the rioters.
It has such a different feel
from other sculptures but since it was rare for women to create works like this at that time, it would be sad to see it destroyed.
