LSU's Journalism Building sits in the shadow of the football stadium. My granddaughter, a senior in the School of Mass Communication, recently learned that all her courses but one will be taught virtually this fall. But football? LSU still plans to go forward with a modified season.
I am the grandparent of a former college football player, but I'm wondering about our priorities.
I have to agree with you. In the South football seems to be king. It is also big business and difficult to do virtually. Great shot of the Journalism Building.
@grammyn Thanks, Katy! Maria about broke my heart when she said, "I just want a graduation in May" and I thought about your photo in your cap and gown, and the high school graduate next door who posed in his on the front porch.... She is also scared about the job market, as many of her friends who graduated last May are still looking for jobs. Scary time.
@joysabin Sigh. Football is life in the South, but so many people have defied mask and social distancing orders and we are having a surge in COVID cases and deaths. Frustrating!
@bkbinthecity Thanks for your comment. It is sad for the players and fans to cancel a sport, but sadder to go ahead and play and have more people get sick, in my opinion.
@eudora I can understand worrying about the lack of a ceremony. It is such a great achievement and deserves to be recognized by the public. Even more disconcerting is the thought of not being able to find a job though.
There are so many things to take into consideration. My son's soccer team will be playing a short season this Fall but with no fans in the stadium. They are hoping that by the Spring season the fans will be able to return.
@olivetreeann There IS a lot to consider, and I am glad I don't have to make the decisions! My former football player tells me that playing without fans would be like a scrimmage, not a game, so I sympathize with your son and his players. My son with a high school junior is very concerned about the financial impact on colleges.
The Big 10 and the Pac 8 both just cancelled...I cannot see how football can be in any way safe for the players. But I'm relieved for your granddaughter as university dorms and classrooms are breeding grounds - no different in many ways than the cruise ships. All our schools will suffer, along with all the students who are missing what should be wonderful college experiences.
Priorities ... i hope your granddaughter gets along well. I feel bad for those who take covid seriously and have to live with the consequences of those who don't.
