November 24, 1963

The only time I visited the U.S. Capitol was to join thousands of others to file by the casket of John F. Kennedy as he lay in state in the Rotunda. I kept thinking of that night as I watched the news from Washington this week.

Oh, to have had a camera (or a cellphone) with me that night!
Did you live in Louisiana then?

@allie912 No, I was a freshman at Mary Washington College (now University of MW) in Fredericksburg, VA. My roommates lived in Alexandria, so I went home with them for a few days after Kennedy's assassination. My mother (back in NJ) was an ardent Republican. I asked her if it was OK to go to Washington and she said to go, it was something I would never forget,. She was right.

@eudora I was a sophomore at Brown University. I’m sure everyone alive at that time remembers that fateful week.

I was too young to remember this, but I do remember the assassination of his brother. I was in elementary school then. There are a few events in American history that we all have etched in our memories. And photographs of them are so important. Even if our children/grandchildren are not taught about them, perhaps they'll discover the pictures someday and want to know more.

@olivetreeann Remembering the assassinations of John & Robert Kennedy & Martin Luther King, Jr has actually helped me deal with the events of this past week. Our country got through that time and I hope we'll get through this as well. Of course, that was before social media....
