Recovering After the Fire by exposure4u

Recovering After the Fire

I took this shot from my deck looking south at the mountain that the fires of last summer rolled over the ridge and took 346 homes in my neighborhood. It was intentionally set up in a hiking area much further up in the mountains. After days of fighting the fire in late June of last year, the winds, as well as no rain and high temperatures, aided in the fire gaining speed, that swept down the mountain and into our homes. We were fortunate to have escaped with minimal damage. Others that lost homes have been in the process of rebuilding these past several months. It is wonderful seeing the area getting back to "normal." It had been said, it will take 72 years for the forest to regenerate and look like it did before the fire.
where is this?
we have a patch like this in our city too... from a few years ago.
fire is powerful.

Where is this??? We were evacuated during the San Diego County wildfires of 07. Fortunately, our home survived, but hundreds of homes did not. We were able to return 4 1/2 days later.

@glendq This is in Colorado Springs, CO. It came over June 26th last year. We feel very fortunate to still have our home, but it sure has been a process seeing our neighborhood trying to get back to some sort of "normal."
@aglennc This is in Colorado Springs, CO. We were out of our home for 10 days. I was sure feeling very fortunate to have not lost our home! So glad to hear your home survived too!! I have been seeing the news with the California fires this year and it sure brings back memories!

@glendq @aglennc BTW: It was the Waldo Canyon Fire, if you want to google it.

A really dramatic capture. We have quite a few heathland fires in our area and they cause so much damage.

@exposure4u So GLAD your home survived also. Oh, yes, we heard all about the Colorado Springs fires....... Yes, the LA area fires are surely bringing back horrifying memories, aren't they?

@aglennc Thank you Anita and it sure does bring back scary memories, especially the not knowing if our home was destroyed or not! I remember just wanting to know one way or the other, so I could move on.
@ellimae LOL! Yes, I told my kids to please come back when they are in their 80-90's to check things out! Amazing it takes so long! Many have been donating their time and resources to replant trees in the area!!

72 years! Incredible. I couldn't imagine the horror of having to face this, so my heart goes out to all those involved. So very moving.

Wow. Looks so desolate. I have seen areas that have been re-forested. And it is amazing how long it actually takes

I am so glad your home survived. This is an amazing photo story. As a side note, 66 homes were lost in Pocatello, ID (90 miles from me) at the same time your area burned. The Colorado fire was so devastating that the Pocatello fire was never even mentioned in the national news, but it was sure a major disaster for SE Idaho.

@rvwalker Thank you Ross. That is a shame the fire in Idaho wasn't mentioned in the news, especially with that many homes lost! I sure hope we all get lots of rain this year! It has been terribly dry again for us.

great shot! sad but beautiful at the same time!

I am glad you made it through the fires okay! I love this (and the story behind it)... the charcoaled trees, with the resilient moss growing back over the ground... amazing.

Hi Wendy, I live in Woodland Park. I pass by the Waldo Canyon burn scar everyday back and forth to my job in the Springs. It is almost unbelievable that another fire has devastated the area again.
