My get pushed partner for the week, Mary Siegle, @mcsiegle , (two weeks ago) challenged me to get off the farm and take a photo of town.
Alexandria is a long thin town that straddles Highway 34 in Eastern Ontario. It is one of the few places where you can stand in the middle of Main Street in the middle of a work day and not get run over! (As shown above)
It was settled in the early 1800's because of the river that meanders through town. There was a mill built by Father Alexander MacDonell, that later became 'The Priest's Mill Restaurant', one of the dozen eateries in town.
Alexandria, while having lost most of its manufacturing industries, still thrives because it serves a wide agricultural area. It has four main grocery stores, three florists, three hardware, two optometrists, two dentists, and too many odd niche market businesses to name.
But - most importantly - in my view - it is home to the Glengarry News, a weekly community newspaper that has served Glengarry County for over 100 years.
The name Glengarry seems to ring a bell...are you any where near Uxbridge or Port Perry....I have looked on my world map but you must be too small to be on there. We have farming friends who live in that area....would be so strange if you knew them!!
I thought my village view wouldn't be interesting but realise as |I look at yours how good it is to see where people live!
A very interesting look at your neighbourhood Wendy. Sounds a very warm & welcoming place.
@happypat Glengarry is actually the name of the county and Alexandria is the name of the town, and we are the furtherest south and east in Ontario that you can get. Further south and east of Ottawa - capital of Canada.
Try map questing Alexandria rather than Glengarry.
Splendid! Mission accomplished -- and taken just in the nick of time -- since there is an oncoming car. Yes, I know...in the middle of the workday, middle of the street, and still not run over. Neat town --wow, three florists?
Colourful street view, with (I notice) The Glengarry News building on the middle right. You forgot to mention that there are 4 sets of traffic lights in town -- all strung along this street.
