St. Raphael's Bell by farmreporter

St. Raphael's Bell

In 1970 a fire consumed the church of St. Raphael's, one of the earliest Roman Catholic churches in English-speaking Canada. Fortunately the outer walls were spared and today its impressive scale and fine masonry work continue to attract the tourists to the site. The Ruins were declared a National Historic Site in 1999.

There is a panorama of these ruins in my Themes and Competitions album along with a more complete history of the ruins for those who are interested.

I do like the color, light and shadow of this photo (and of course the subject) But then again I am partial to all things Canuck ;)

My first thoughts were the same as Jens - what a huge bell! Does anyone know how the fire started Wendy @farmreporter ?

That's about the biggest bell I've ever seen! Would be interesting to know how the fire started. A nice capture, too 😌

Thank you all for your comments. I do appreciate each and every one!
I checked the local newspaper for news on the fire, and it said cause was unknown.
As for the size of the bell - it isn't as big as it seems in the photo. I would say it is about 2 ½ to 3 feet tall. Definitely imposing but I imagine there are bigger ones around.

wonderful wreck of a bell. I bet that close-ups of the metal would be fascinating as well.

Interesting! I really like the stonework in the background too. We see a lot of that around here too.
