Blue Hour Silhouettes by farmreporter

Blue Hour Silhouettes

I am kicking myself for not bringing my tripod with me to the park now that I know how to do HDR.
But luckily, I did forget it since I needed to do some silhouettes for my get pushed challenge from April @aecasey and this fills the bill nicely.
I also purposely went to the park 30 minutes before sunset so I could get a blue hour shot for the blue hour challenge.
Ann @olivetreeann gave detailed instructions on how to do this as follows.
"If your shots will be hand-held, you will need a wide aperture and high ISO.
If you will be using a low aperture, you will need a tripod.
Most pros recommend shooting ISO 100 to 400 with f/8 or f/11. And most recommend using a tripod too due to the low level of light. A tripod allows you to shoot with a lower ISO and avoid the noise level of higher ISOs.
I found some photographers who shoot the Blue Hour in manual, but most seemed to prefer Aperture Priority."
I shot manual with a wide open aperture and high ISO because I neglected to bring my tripod!

April, @aecasey, here is one set of silhouettes. I did go out in search of silhouettes tonight but then got side tracked by the geese at the park. It was serendipity that allowed me to get this blue hour silhouette.
I would rather be lucky than good any day!

This is beautifully peaceful. I love the blues and silhouettes with reflections. Nicely done.

This is lovely Wendy:)
So pleased I've been partnered with you again for Get Pushed this week, you did say last time you liked being challenged ...
How about us both doing the same thing perhaps? I suggest that because Mona has created a gif of her cat today, and I fell in love with it. I've Googled whether or not it's possible in Elements which I've got and it would seem it is. It doesn't look particularly easy though. I want to have a go at this anyway, so how would you feel about doing it too? I may be totally out of my depth here btw. What are you feelings on this? If you'd rather do something else completely different, I'd be happy with that too. Will wait to hear from you:) Felicity

I think there's a hymn with a line '...calm at the end of the day'. This reminded me of it, yet haven't found the hymn...yet.

@fbailey
Just in case you missed my note to you in your marvelous shot of the triple staircase, it is a great idea for us both to learn how to do gif with this challenge. I am eager to give it a try - have a few ideas already - and looking forward to what you come up with as well!

@farmreporter Hi Wendy, I wish I'd never suggested it!! I've watched that many YouTube tutorials and spent so long on it, mainly without success - I have progressed slightly as I have a very short clip of two shots of a dandelion with a solitary seed falling off but sadly I can't remember how on earth I achieved it! For me at any rate this is going to be a long and laborious process, hope it's easier for you:) I'm not terribly knowledgeable about layers so it's a good learning curve ... hope you enjoy it. I will if I ever get it finished:)) Felicity

@fbailey
Ohhh, nooo!! Sounds as if we are in for a trial!
Tell you what. I am going to contact my tech expert who can explain it to me at my tech level and I might be able to send some advice your way.
Or maybe I will be crying to you for some help!! Either way, we will keep in touch over the week..
I will give my idea a try tomorrow.

@farmreporter I've managed it! Needs some tweaking but I got there:) Had a problem viewing the thing so actually phoned the computer shop for some advice but they'd never done gifs either ... the one I've done is very small and I kept getting a message up saying couldn't animate as file too large so I'll have to keep it tiny I'm afraid. Late last night I was like a dog with two tails, both wagging!! Good luck:)

I really appreciated that you took those instructions to heart! That's why I chose it as a finalist! I think I would suggest in the future that if you take a shot like this and want it to have a full blue hour effect, you could have cropped the lighter sky down a bit- but that's just my opinion! High marks for putting all that info into practice!
