These are grain elevators where farmers bring their grain to sell. They are usually located beside train tracks for ease of transportation to the Great Lake ports - then points east for processing.

Sadly, more and more of them are getting torn down in favour of fewer huge concrete ones. This means farmers have to haul their grain further. But then, farmers now have bigger trucks so I guess it all evens out in the end!
