A Month of Birds - American Avocet by farmreporter

A Month of Birds - American Avocet

I am most surprised at the variety of birds found in Calgary. I am unfamiliar with many of them so decided to photograph them for my own personal interest. Hence this month of birds!

This shorebird breeds mainly in the West and favours highly saline micro habitats. It disperses widely after breeding, with many birds winding up along the coast.
They are large, long-legged and long billed but the female has a more sharply up-turned bill than the male.
Love the clarity on this

The American Avocet is a wet shorebird of the west or central prairies: I deduce that you are now settled there! What a beautiful bird, never seen although I have been an amateur ornithologist since I was 11 years old!

Yes - we are staying with friends in Calgary until our house in Nanton becomes available - the present owner has to renovate her new house so we cannot get into ours until mid-July.
