Smithsonian Field Guide says that the red-winged blackbird is perhaps the most abundant bird in North America. It breeds in wetlands of all sorts and wanders into croplands to feed. In winter, forms immense roosts but smaller parties will visit feeders. It will arrive very early in the spring with the males establishing marshland territories immediately.
