Marsh Helleborine by fbailey

Marsh Helleborine

A wild UK orchid which can be found in fens, damp grassland, marshes and dune slacks, especially with chalky soils. Photograph taken at Sandwich Bay, Kent.

The flower spike has a loose cluster of white flowers with a white frilly lip and reddish sepals that look like wings.

@carole_sandford Thanks Carole, this is the first time I've come across these two. They're unobtrusive plants but very pretty nonetheless.

@jorlam Thank you! I was lucky enough to be introduced to a chap who's very knowledgeable about orchids and fungi - otherwise I wouldn't have known about any of the orchid shots I've put up here:)

@merrelyn Thank you! I think I read that there are about 50 varieties of UK wild orchid but sadly not all in my immediate area. It's really opened my eyes:)
