This is the Channel, taken overlooking Folkestone. The tiny lights barely visible are on the French coast, some 21 miles away.
This picture does not do the real thing justice at all. The moonlight was so bright. I don't know my camera settings in depth at all, it's still a work in progress. It's scenes like this that make me all the more determined to understand its workings properly ...
Lovely capture I like the light on the water. I'm not sure how you would want to improve it? You could get more detail of the moon if you use a smaller shutter speed say 1/100 but you would need to raise the ISO which will add more noise to the image.
@lovingandsharing Thanks so much Kay! The camera was on a tripod with legs fully extended. I couldn't see the dials so I had to keep tipping it over into the sidelights of the car to see what mode I was in ... all very hit and miss:)
@fbailey you sound just like me now lol Richards advice seems worth a go, I been trying to learn my camera buttons by touch, as I found I was stopping all the time to look what I was doing...still think your shot is nice as you have captured it.
@rjb71 Thanks Richard, I've just about grasped a few of the basics. I thought the moon was too glowing, the light on the water not defined sufficiently and the French coastline is a tad wobbly. Apart from that it's ok! It was pitch black and I had trouble working out whether I was in shutter or manual mode ...
I think this is a great shot - and I love the star burst on the moon. The reflections are lovely as are the lights of France.
I know you say you wish you had someone with you but I find that a person remembers best when they do it on their own ... I do anyway!
This is gorgeous on black. I find a headlamp is really handy for night shots- always carry one in my camera bag, just in case! Easy to turn on and off in a hurry. You might want to try two shots - one exposing for the moon and the other for the water and then combine them in post processing. I have never done this but have read about this process.
