Ooh what an exciting moment - to see something rising up from the crater. We knew Vesuvius is active but didn't expect such proof..! The crater is some 700m across - the dots you can see on the far side are people on the edge looking in. Massive. The advice was 'if you feel shaking, run'....! Well I certainly wouldn't want to be near this sleeping giant if/when it blows.
@happypat Hi Pat! no, there was no heat coming from the crater, and I can't say I smelled any gases either... it got noticeably cooler as we approached the summit but I think that was the height. Thanks for calling by :)
