Once the younger children had danced, it was the time of the 'Old Scholars' to dance around their may pole. These are folk who were all brought up in the area, danced on May Day when they were children at the local school, and still do it today. Love this shot of them standing proudly, ready to start... not sure how old the youngest is, but there are certainly grandparents around there, and hand-embroidered smocks that have seen many may days too :)
I love it!
Wonderfully evocative portrait. I LOVED maypole dancing when I was at school - we had one in the playground and spent all year learning how to do the most amazingly complex pattern weaving and unweaving to do at the May Day fair.!
This takes me back to my childhood. This is not something that happens much here and certainly not with the old scholars. I love seeing the depth of history that you live in. I keep saying I need to make that trip - and then there is the economy......
