Shop signs by fishers

Shop signs

These two pictures are rare survivors from the days when shops had recognisable models outside instead of having words on a sign. The pestle and mortar is still outside a pharmacy, and the rocking horse used to be above a toy shop but that closed a few years ago and the space is currently empty. I think these are the only two to survive in Lancaster, but I'll keep my eyes open for some more! - Lucy
A great spot and capture.

I'd forgotten all about these - thanks for the reminder. I'm not sure there are any round here, but perhaps I'm just not observant enough. Good collage.

Nice find for these two signs. Seldom does one see items like this in the US. Exceptions are barber poles and pawn shop signs.

Great find. Very cool shops at your place!

Nice piece of history there. In the distant past, words would have been useless because most folk were illiterate.

Strange that you should ask to have ANZAC Biscuits sent over. They were designed precisely for that purpose. They are hardy and keep almost for ever.

@suelaubscher It is, it looks like it gets painted pretty regularly - Lucy

@dolphin I think they are pretty rare now. The pestle and mortar is very cracked and on a main road, so I'm not sure how much longer it will survive. - Lucy

@pyrrhula Thank you, they make an interesting feature on buildings- Lucy

@rossevs Thank you. There's a green sign under the pestle and mortar which says they're very rare, but it would be interesting to see some others - Lucy

@bobhuegel That's interesting, what does a pawn shop sign look like? - Lucy

@witchyjacq Thank you, yes they are, I just wish so many weren't empty - Lucy

@tonydebont Exactly Tony. But it's interesting that the pharmacy sign has changed from being a pestle and mortar to being a green cross today, isn't it? - Lucy

@tonydebont Hi Tony, think this was posted on the wrong pic!

@fishers Lucy, the pawn shop sign is typically 3 gold balls, about one foot (30cm) in diameter hanging down over the doorway. Check out Google images for a view.
