I see these flats on my regular visits to Sheffield to see my parents. They overlook the bus station and can be seen from the railway station.
Park Hill is a council housing estate in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It was built between 1957 and 1961, and in 1998 was given Grade II* listed building status.
Following a period of decline, the estate is being renovated by developers Urban Splash.[2]The concept of the flats was described as streets in the sky. Broad decks, wide enough for milk floats, had large numbers of front doors opening onto them. Each deck of the structure, except the top one, has direct access to ground level at some point on the sloping site. The site also allows the roofline to remain level despite the building varying between four and thirteen stories in height. The scheme also incorporates a shopping precinct and a primary school.
Recent renovations have led to it beingshortlisted for the Stirling Prize, the Royal Institute of British Architects' highest accolade.
A great colorful capture and a great info to. thanks for the links so i did have a good information.
We have something similar in Holland . In Amsterdam . ( you won`t believe it ) Bijlmermeer Amsterdam But they have turn it back and rebuild the most to more friendly houses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijlmermeer
Cool image and interesting information. Most our tall buildings like that are gone now from the are I live due to the earthquake in Christchurch in 2011. I doubt that they will be replaced with anything much higher than four floors.
Thanks for posting these. I haven't been to Sheffield for a while, but had friends and family there in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and have even taken field trips there, so have seen these evolve. Great pov!
@thresheg Thanks Graham. I've seen them in all their stages and various renovations. I think this is an improvement on what was there before. Katharine
@gamelee Thanks Lee. I've been trying to get a half decent picture for ages of the flats. I couldn't get close enough when they were renovating for my camera to take a decent shot. katharine
@tonydebont Thanks Tony. They used to be all grey with graffiti. I think this is a better look although as usual there is some controversy about the colours used. Katharine
@dolphin Thanks Molly. They always seemed to be causing some controversy whatever the decade. No doubt that will continue as we watch the developments. Katharine
@andrewrome365 It was interesting to look up the history of the flats as I didn't know that much about them, only the controversy surrounding them over the years. katharine
