Bentinck Memorial, Mansfield

This is the Bentinck Memorial, erected in 1849 in memory of Lord George Bentinck, a major landowner in and around Mansfield. It is located in the centre of the Market Place and surrounded by an attractive selection of buildings of various ages.

The centre section of this monument was supposed to contain a statue of Lord George, but money ran out and it was never made (That has a strangely modern sound to it!)

If my memory serves me he was also a colliery owner. Bentinck colliery was not far away but would think it has all gone now.
