An opportunity for a walk from the village of Millington, on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds some 15 miles east of York was not to be missed. It is an area I know quite well but it is a long time since I walked there.
Towards the end of the walk the route passed the entrance to Lily Dale, which contains Millington Woods. The autumn colours in the trees drew us in for a closer look, and a walk up along the valley.
The woodland was originally all ash, and it is thought to have existed for over 1,000 years, but other species of trees were added by the Forestry Commission in the 1960s. Much work is now being done to remove these additional species to restore the natural ash woodland. Trees removed are used for charcoal making, and the charcoal is sold locally.
This shot was taken at the entrance to the woods, and shows that autumn still lingers on here, although perhaps not for much longer - we are promised much colder weather in the next few days.
Thank you Carli. I love the autumn colours too - and they seem to be lasting a long time this year.
