I'm a bit surprised a picture of this hasn't made it on here yet, as it's my preferred tourist attraction in Paris. The Arc de Triomphe is a war memorial which honours those who fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. It was commissioned in 1806 by Emperor Napoleon, but It wasn't finished until 1836.
Underneath now lies the Tomb of the Unknown Solider - an unnamed soldier who was interred here in 1920. On the ground above is an eternal flame, which burns in memory of those who died and were never identified. It is out of respect to this soldier that victory and commemorative parades don't actually pass under the arch any more. - Lucy
This was one of the first pic.(postcard ) my parents send us from there first holiday in France , back in 1952. You did capture it beautiful and in great perspective. Thanks for you kind wishes, same in return.
I loved the Arc de Triomphe when visiting Paris. I also love how the cars drive crazily around the circle! :-)
You captured it's majesty in this shot, well done.
@kjarn Thanks Kathy. I like it especially because it serves more of a purpose than capitalism! The Eiffel Tower was constructed purely to be big an impressive and expensive, whereas I think this is more beautiful for having meaning behind it - Lucy
