I'm visiting Lucy and today we fulfilled one of my ambitions to visit Versailles. I have read about the Chateau and the Trianons in both novels and history books but nothing prepared me for the scale and opulence of Versailles. The whole place seemed to be one of light and gilding (despite the rain), characterised most clearly by the Hall of Mirrors.
It's a bit breathtaking the first time you step into the Hall of Mirrors. My favourite thing at Versailles is the fabulous sculpture of the horses and chariot emerging from the fountain at the top of the cascade of lakes.

@pyrrhula Thanks Ferry. I liked that I could see what I had read about, the scale of the gilding ans statues was far more than I could have ever imagined. I have to say not my taste either although one or two of the chandeliers took my eye. Katharine
@vignouse I loved going around the whole place. Unfortunately non of the fountains were working and most of the grounds were in winter mode with statues wrapped up. I did see the sculpture you refer to and it was impressive without water. Have passed on your recommendation of where to eat to Lucy. Katharine
