At the end of last week I had a few days with my mum since she was due for more eye treatment at the Hospital.
On Friday afternoon I went for a walk while she had a rest. I went to look at the land reclamation in the area close to the northern boundary of Rotherham, where the former industrial land has become a large area of housing, new industrial estates and a park, golf course and lake.
Here is the view north-west over the new lake. This area was once a huge railway marshalling yard, and a coal mine. The ridge at the far side of the lake is what remains of the colliery spoil heap, and it is now a golf course. The lake itself is completely artificial.
Large clouds are building beyond the lake. I had about 1 1/2 miles to walk from here back to my mum's house, and I made it with just a couple of minutes before the rain began. Not all my walks have such a happy ending!
Thank you Molly - Rotherham has changed a lot since the 1980s, with the loss of much of the coal mining and heavy industry, and areas like this where the land has been restored are really nice.
Thank you John - fortunately I made it back to my mums before the rain started.
